This evening we found this little girl had been born to one of our newly acquired goat mamas. I didn’t know mama was going to give birth or I would have isolated her. A pig lifted the gate to the goat pen and broke in mauling her feet. I didn’t even know the baby was hurt at first, because she was such a freshie and wasn’t standing. I decided to move them into a safe space, leave her with mom, and come back in two hours to check on them both. She was in the same space as to when I left her. Now I know something is wrong. Upon further inspection, I found one of her hooves was missing and the other barely hanging on. The alternate back foot was also damaged, but not as bad. I brought her inside and had my farmhand, Jen, and my son go back and milk mama for colostrum. We cleaned babies feet up, gave her some pain meds and called the vet. He will see her first thing in the morning, but I had already done all the things necessary to get her comfortable. I’ve been slowly syringe feeding more colostrum in her and keeping her warm in a heated blanket beside my bed. I’ve also made a bed on the ground for myself, Noel, and my dog to sleep tonight. It’s going to be a long night, but even longer for her. I’ve named her (she is a girl) Peanut because of her color and her tiny little body reminds me of one. First thing in the morning we go to the vet to access what all needs to be done to help her. My heart hurts. I hate it when they hurt. It’s just the worst, but hopefully I can get her to pull through. I’m sad and overwhelmed right now, but..I signed up for this, so I have to see it through. Sorry for being so blubbery..I am a mess.
