Genuine repair is about reciprocally recognizing and empathizing with the effect our actions had on each other. Sometimes, the fault lies exclusively with one person, other times both had a hand in the relational fallout. Repair doesn't come from correctly drawing the lines around where each person is to blame (although it can include that). It's about coming to a deeper understanding of what was needed: "In that moment, what was it that you wished I had recognized or acknowledged?" “How did it feel when I said that?” “What was the most important thing you wanted me to grasp?" "What were you hoping I would understand when you said/did that?" "What kind of support or reassurance were you looking for that you didn't receive?" "How did you hope I would respond in that moment?" Questions like these open up the experience of the conversation, not just where to put the blame. That’s the path that leads to repair. #communicationtips #matthiasjbarker #psychotherapist #apologies #apologizing #apologize
