Can you really “train” the lower abs as if they’re an isolated group? Technically no, but there are caveats to this. Many sensations will occur closer to the pelvis when we move our legs and trunk - as in a hanging leg raise - but mostly because of hip-flexor related stuff. I do, however, see validity in training ab motions that start from the bottom-up (as opposed to the top-down) for the same reason you’d want to do both a hinge and leg curls for total hamstrings development….the fibers closer to the moving segment, especially in the case of the abs, will likely need to perform more work than the non-moving segment. This is because fibers don’t all span the length of a muscle and rather share connection indirectly. And as a PS - abdominal “definition” will mostly come about through lowering body fat percentage, which can come in the form of losing fat or gaining muscle. Either way, the Rectus is still capable of growth, just like any other muscle is. Did you like this and want to learn more from me? Go to modernmeathead.com !
