Upon landing in favorable conditions on a new planet, these cosmic hitchhikers can initiate biological evolution. Notably, panspermia does not solve the mystery of how life initially emerged in the universe; it merely shifts the starting point of genesis from early Earth to another cosmic location. This theory is supported by actual discoveries of Martian meteorites on Earth (like ALH 84001) and the proven extreme resilience of certain terrestrial organisms — such as tardigrades, Deinococcus radiodurans bacteria, and fungal spores — which can survive years of cosmic radiation, hard vacuum, and freezing temperatures, while also enduring the crushing pressures and heat of atmospheric entry. Conversely, directed panspermia—a concept famously co-proposed by DNA co-discoverer Francis Crick—explores the scenario where life was intentionally sent to a young Earth by an advanced alien civilization. In the 21st century, as amino acids and complex hydrocarbons are continuously found inside comet tails and meteorites (such as the Murchison meteorite), a variant known as pseudopanspermia (or molecular panspermia) has gained significant traction.
