Sugar plantations are sacred ground in the Caribbean region. For West Indians, they are a reminder of a time when cruel Colonial powers enslaved MILLIONS of Indigenous and African people, ripped them away from their families and stripped them of their identities and culture. The stones from these structures were carried, carved, and laid by the hands of enslaved people who were forcibly worked until death, and then were laid to rest in unmarked graves along the rolling plush hillsides that outsiders find to be the perfect backdrop for their plantation wedding photos. Year after year, people NOT ancestrally tied to this land come to the Caribbean in search of the perfect wedding venue. They bypass the soft sandy shores of our beaches laced with blue water, they bypass the plethora of luxury villas overlooking the glow of the water’s edge, only to select a Sugar Plantation as the site of their ceremony, reception, and pictures. A Sugar Plantation whose history is tied to the torture and suffering of millions of people. Sugar Plantations are sacred land. They are not products to be consumed and exploited. You can’t love the Caribbean if you don’t love the Caribbean people.
