Recently, I haven’t felt much like I’m in control. As an actor you’re at the mercy of other people’s input, creatively. At work, much of what I create is at the mercy of other opinions and a collaborative process. In my PhD, there are academic structures in place that strip the creativity out of even the most creative of processes (even, ironically, when those creative elements were planted to satirise the rigidity of academia in the first place). My novel, Undreamt, that I’ve spent many years writing, has suffered perhaps, from too much input. Too many different ideas and opinions muddying the water, making it hard to see what it was originally all about. And so I’ve started on something new - something predominantly for me. If only to see whether I can do it. A new novel that I’ve started work on. Lighthearted. I think it’s upper middle grade or lower young adult. Probably somewhere in that zone. Who knows if anything will ever come of it. But I’ve made a dent already - and I’m excited about the story I have to tell.
