I think it’s important to regularly challenge yourself. If you don’t challenge yourself, you don’t know what you’re capable of. However, in this instance, I think the challenge was a bit too great, and I should have known better. I looked up the weather for the days we had planned to be out and didn’t think too much of the temperatures. I knew it would be warm, but I was thinking there would be enough shade and water to not really have to worry. I had done this trail 4 times before, and twice with Nala, every time as a day hike, and although it was hard, it never really felt dangerous. But with how our timing worked out, we ended up hiking through the hottest, most exposed sections of trail during the hottest part of the day and it started to get me worried while we were hiking. I think had it not been for the heat, we would have been perfectly fine. The distance was pretty significant for Nala being 6 years old now, and although we’re both hobbling around a little bit today from some soreness, I still think the distance is within her limits, especially since we broke it up between 2 days (although the second day we did about 2/3 of the mileage in one shot. I post a lot of very pleasant experiences with Nala, and 98 times out of a 100, that’s exactly what they are. But we do occasionally have some experiences that get me worried and I wanted to share that here. Thankfully we both completed this safely, and I now understand her new threshold for adventures such as this one.
