@drterryannescott: Dr. Terry Anne Scott, Director of the Institute for Common Power, is standing at the banks of the Alabama River in Montgomery, Alabama. By the 1850s, Montgomery had become the largest slave trading system in the country. It was part of a domestic, or Internal, slave trade that delivered nearly 1.2 million enslaved children and adults to the lower South. It is estimated that nearly half of all African American families were separated as a result of this trade. This trade built the wealth of the New World. From banks and universities, to Wall Street and numerous industries, they were able to grow and thrive because of enslaved people who died pennyless.
