this is exactly why I told my mom no to a dog....she's now gone and I took her 2 cats. She mentioned wanting a dog and I said ABSOLUTELY NOT, I don't want another dog!!

A rescue where I live has started a senior program where the senior get a pet and upon death or hospice it goes back to the rescue, a Til Death Do Us Part foster program. Gets older cats into a home

I also encourage senior humans to adopt senior pets for this reason. (Still with a backup). You’re less likely to outlive them and their energy level is probably better suited for you!
