Yeah you end up helping people on their projects that get them promotions, but you don’t get them.

I thought this was only going to be a problem at a team-based workplace, but I'm in my PhD now after working for five years, and I noticed my supervisors add additional work to my projects, like more extensive data analysis or recruiting more participants than our target, whenever I finish the original goal quickly 😖

The “trick” is to find a way to leverage good performance into some say as to which tasks are given to you. Take the best ones in terms of visibility, impact, learning experience —> promotion.

This happened to me even though I’m the youngest my brothers suck at doing chores and will take absolutely forever to do them and when my mom realized I can do chores efficiently I ended doing their chores to because they stopped trying because they knew my mom would just have me do it and everyone in my house whenever I would have a breakdown about being overwhelmed would tell me that I should be grateful because it’s a compliment that they think I’m so efficient 😭

I worked in corpo for a long time and when I first started, I had that mindset to be the best&always competitive😭 in the long run it made me burnout so much because tasks (even the ones idk how to) -

oh this happened to me today. I did my job too well and clients no longer needed the sole service I was provided machinery for... and they shut down my branch. no warning.

These employees also dont get promoted or have a hard time getting promoted. If you’re super efficient, work at 70-80% capacity and focus on advocating for yourself and showcasing your value.
