@astrozstarr: The most widely accepted theory about the Moon's formation is the giant impact hypothesis. Around 4.5 billion years ago, when the solar system was still forming, a Mars-sized body called Theia collided with the early Earth. The collision was so powerful that it caused a large amount of debris to be ejected into space, which eventually came together to form the Moon. Over time, the debris that remained in orbit around Earth started to clump together due to gravity. This process, known as accretion, led to the formation of a spherical body—the Moon.
