1 incandescent bulb is VASTLY cheaper than a digital led display with programming and can network tied to it. Plus, manufacturers are doing EVERYTHING they can to keep it difficult for the consumer

Or you can do what Chrysler used to do and turn the key on/off 3 times for it to literally display the code on the odo. The OBD1 Chryslers would flash the engine light like Morse code

In older jeeps you can cycle the ignition and the odometer shows you codes.
