The Rif War (1921-1926): The Rise of a Hero: Faced with Spanish occupation in the Rif, Abdelkrim united the Berber tribes and led a bold revolt. In 1921, he inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Spanish at the Battle of Annual, capturing thousands of soldiers and consolidating an independent Rifian state. Inspired by ideals of freedom and modernization, he established a structured administration and a nascent republican state. However, in 1925, France joined Spain in a massive offensive, deploying over 500,000 troops and using chemical weapons. After a heroic resistance, Abdelkrim surrendered in 1926 to prevent the massacre of his people. He was exiled to the island of Réunion for over twenty years. Exile and Final Struggles: In 1947, he was transferred to France but managed to escape and found refuge in Egypt, where he became a key figure in the Arab and African anti-colonial movement. He supported Moroccan and Algerian independence fighters until his death in Cairo in 1963. Legacy: Abdelkrim El Khattabi remains a symbol of anti-colonial resistance and the struggle for the independence of oppressed peoples. His fight inspired revolutionaries worldwide, from Ho Chi Minh to Che Guevara.
