Never give a builder a deposit. Go pay for the materials yourself. Basically every merchant in the country will let you do this.

Realistically this approach will lose you work, customers don’t like it when you earn more than them plain and simple. If they are happy with the overall price, that is enough.

We do 50-50 for any jobs over a couple of hundred. 50% deposit and then 50% on completion regardless of how long job takes

make sure the materials are for your job and not his next job, leave unused materials with you. get a vat receipt for all goods and vat invoice for the job. do not pay cash ever

we do big jobs and small and its always the same, every 2 weeks we take a payment for works completed. some jobs can be 9 months + so you never wait until the end for payment.

50% first day the other 50% once your done , to take only the cost of materials is mad. I don’t trust no1 simple I’ve been done by the nicest of people with no problems to the job whatsoever

No chance I’d give a deposit before a job. I’d not pay the full amount either until at least 2/3 weeks after the job has been completed. Always keep some back for snags
