In July 2023, we went to Utah with Aurora for our first free flight trip (basically a planned trip where people get together to fly their free flight trained birds outside). That same week, my son Zach went with some friends to Wisconsin for the Oshkosh air show. My son was an aviation mechanic for the Air Force and was obsessed with planes, particularly WWII era planes. On the morning of July 29th, one day before he was scheduled to fly home, he decided to ride with a pilot friend (my son was not a pilot) in a T6-Texan, a WWII trainer, something he had wanted to do for a very long time. The plane went down as I was on the other side of the country loading the car for the drive home. I didn't find out until 4:30 that evening. My husband and I drove through the night to get home to my family. The only words I have to describe that day is living nightmare. It’s the most pain I have ever felt, and will probably ever feel, in my life. It’s taken me a long time to share about this here but I am sharing it because it is a big part of my life that still impacts me today. I still look up, as if I am expecting to see him, whenever a plane flies over. If not for the birds, I don't know what I would have done. They needed me and that gave me purpose in my darkest hours. The pain has never gone away. I have just learned to live with it and find joy despite it. Part of that is because Zach would have wanted me to. Part of that is because I want to. I have promised myself to love and live life to the fullest for my son who can’t. Love to you all, Jen 💚
