January 17th, 1972. Four days after the coup on Busia. Acheampong stands at Burma Camp, Ghana's Defence Ministry headquarters, flanked by his new ten-man council: army, navy, air force, police, all represented. And he makes his case to the country. He calls Busia's government hypocritical, economically incompetent, no different from the 'malpractices' of the Nkrumah era. Then comes the reassurance: the NRC will hand over to a democratically-elected government 'as soon as possible.' Here's the part worth catching, that promise has already been made before, almost word for word. Afrifa's NLC called itself 'a temporary regime' back in '67 and stayed two more years past that. Now Acheampong opens with the same script on day four of his own rule. It takes him six years to leave, and not by choice. In 1978 he tries to make military rule permanent through a rigged referendum, and it's his own officers who finally push him out. Then there's the line that ages the worst. He declares the economy 'on a war footing,' says 'no sacrifice will be too great' in the fight against economic malpractice. Six years later, in 1979, he's the one standing in front of a firing squad, convicted of corruption and embezzlement. The man declaring war on malpractice becomes the malpractice he was fighting.
