direction of the glue has nothing really to do with the bond, it's a small wall if done properly should stick. looks to me like the glue skinned and no back buttering that's the reason.

forget about the pan etc. for now. the board ansorbs the water from thinset almost immediately. mortar is dry before tile is set. the troweling isn’t the issue with bonding
