When we used imperial measurements, not metric, a fifth was 1/5 of a gallon. You could also buy pints.

Alcohol used to be sold in imperial, so a quart was more common. They changed to metric and landed on 750 mL, which is 7mL shy of 1/5th of a gallon. So most bottles are 750, and 1.5L are also common.

A fifth is 25.4 ozs or 750 ml. It's an old measurement from before prohibition. I don't know why we call it a fifth. Doesn't make sense to us either.
