I achieved both 2nd degree in Shito-Ryu karate and brown belt in Aikido. Both the same dojo. It was strictly focused on self defense and "academics". But we also learned the basics of jiujitsu.

as someone who really didn't have any interest in fighting. the army's combatives I did enjoy it because it wasn't all the history and forms. it was slimed down and to the point.

Even within the context of "sport" they're brining moves in from all over as well. I had a ton of crossover between Judo and Wrestling.
