It’s the spring equinox! Since the 1970s, this holiday has been dubbed “Ostara” for a Germanic goddess. There’s a lot of lore out there about Ostara- but unfortunately, this deity suffers from a LOT of misinformation. So here are some facts about Ostara to inform you for your celebrations! Eostre, more popularly known as Ostara, is related to dawn goddess of Indo-European origin. She is known in cultures from the Baltics to the Mediterranean as Saulė, Aušrinė, Eos, Aurora and Ushas. In England, she is attested to only once, from the monk Bede, who recalled that she (Eostre) was honored with feasts in April by the pagan Anglo-Saxons. Ostara is a reconstructed name created by linguist Jacob Grimm in the 1830s. Grimm wanted to create a Germanic pantheon of sorts during a time of nationalism, and enthusiastically surmised that there must have been a Germanic dawn goddess named Ostara. Even though the name is reconstructed, Germanic peoples- to my mind at least- very possibly did have dawn and sun deities related to her at some point in their history. Ostara had become a popular folkloric figure by the early 20th century, and her name became used as part of German nationalist projects, with “Ostara” being the title of a Nazi propaganda magazine published by occultist Lanz von Liebenfels in the early 20th century. Knowing this history can help us be conscious of the political implications of invoking Her and can help to reclaim Her from f*scist uses. Ostara became associated with the Spring Equinox due to Wiccan practitioner Aiden Kelly in 1974. Kelly wanted to create “pagan names” for the solstices and equinoxes, and placed Ostara’s name on the spring equinox- where it has stayed ever since. If you’re looking for authentic history about the neopagan holidays, join me for Singing the Wheel- an 8 week virtual class starting mid-April! We’ll be singing our way through the history and modern practices surrounding each holiday.
