it's the same in Ghana. Today,there are locals who can't speak their native languages,yet take pride in being fluent in English. They will even make fun of those who only speak their native language.

in kenya its a flex if your kids speak only English. i wish they knew... i teach my kids dholuo and i love hearing them speak in luo.
