3 hair growth hacks from a dermatologist with hair loss. As a dermatologist who has struggled with thinning hair, I know first hand how emotional it can feel when you start to lose your hair. While less is more when it comes to skincare, more is (usually) more when it comes to successfully treating hair loss. Incorporating devices like low level laser therapy (LLLT), dermarollers and/or scalp massagers may help increase the efficacy of a hair growth routine that includes topical minoxidil or prescription treatments. Here’s what I recommend: 1. Low level laser therapy has been studied for hormonal hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and can be used alone or in combination with other treatments to increase hair density and to reduce hair shedding. I recommend laser combs if you have medium to long hair and laser caps if have a receding hairline or large bald patches. I recommend the HairMax Ultima for most females as this device was studied in early clinical trials. 2. Carefully use a dermaroller on your scalp a few times per week. Dermarollers create these micro punctures in the scalp which allow minoxidil to absorb better. It is important to sanitize your dermaroller with 70% Isopropryl alcohol before and after use, and look for a dermaroller with 0.25 to 0.5 mm needles to start as these are better tolerated. Use gentle pressure only. For best results, apply 5% minoxidil after using your dermaroller. 3. Scalp massage has been used for centuries to increase blood flow and there is some promising data that it may help to increase hair thickness. I recommend massaging your scalp for 5-10 minutes per day (especially after applying minoxidil or other hair growth topicals, as massage may also help them absorb better). The most well-studied over the counter topical medication for hair growth is 5% Rogaine (minoxidil). Hair serums containing topical caffeine are promising as a minoxidil alternative. For the best results for moderate to severe hair loss, seek treatment from a board certified dermatologist for prescription options. #hairgrowthtips #thinninghair #fyp

How to treat body hyperpigmentation like a dermatologist. Body hyperpigmentation is really common, especially in people with deeper skintones. Here’s how to help it fade away faster: 1. Use a gentle exfoliating cleanser as a body wash 3-4x per week. I love Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA cleanser which contains exfoliating acids, like mandelic acid, which are especially helpful for brightening skin tone. ( I worked with Cetaphil on the launch of this product and trust the science & their products). 2. Apply a retinol body lotion nightly. Retinol helps to turnover skin cells and is great for fading dark marks. Try Versed Press Restart Advanced Retinol Body Butter which is really hydrating and perfect for dry skin. 3. Wear sunscreen daily on any exposed skin. I recommend tinted sunscreen for body hyperpigmentation because it contains iron oxides, which block visible light (a major driver for dark marks), and it also helps camouflage marks. Colorescience Sunforgettable Body Shield Bronze SPF50 is one of the best I’ve used. You can also use any facial tinted sunscreen on your body, too. Thanks @raspberry for sharing your skin #bodyhyperpigmentation #darkspots #fyp
