⚠️ Nuance alert! ⚠️ One thing that happens in the art world (I assume without any bad intent) is that a solid painting principle can slowly morph into an inaccessible standard, keeping people on the periphery of the art world. I think this happens a lot with the idea that painting from life is “superior” to painting from reference photos. To be fair, there are unique benefits to painting from life, I still do it when I can and encourage others to try. But the idea that painting from photos is somehow lesser? I know firsthand that’s not true. Back in 2016, I built my art practice around daily paintings. But after a year of artist block, I realized that painting from a reference photo was better than not painting at all. So I started taking evening walks with my baby strapped to me in an Ergo, snapping reference photos of my neighborhood, then heading to my studio during nap time to paint. That habit became the foundation of my work. Over time, I’ve honed my own photography style, and now I see it as a creative skill in itself—one that actually strengthens my composition and color choices. So, yes, painting from life is valuable! But using your handy, portable camera (aka your iPhone) to make representational painting more accessible is a wonderful thing. And let’s be honest—if the greats had access to an iPhone, you know a few of them would be using it too. 😂🤳🏻 #notsorryartschool #referencephoto #learntopaint
