Chicks are very vulnerable and take special care and attention in their first weeks of life. They are extra sensitive to heat and humidity and a lot of those factors can help be controlled by the way you give them access to water. We brood out anywhere from 600 to 800 chicks at a time, every 4-6 weeks. It takes a lot of extra time changing out small, 1 gallon water containers 2x-3x per day for all those chicks. But they are just too little for bigger containers as they can drown in the basin of them. To be able to use the bigger containers anyway, we line the basin of the large 3 gallon containers with small rocks. It allows the chicks a safe place to climb and perch to get water, keeps them safe and dry and warm and it also cuts chore time WAY down for us, only having to wash and fill waters 1x per day. It also keeps the brooder cleaner and dryer as there is no accidental splashing from the chicks falling into the basin and trying to get out. This keeps their temperature regulated and the humidity in the brooder regulated too. You’d be surprised how much of a difference just having some damp bedding can make in the environment for them and their success growing into strong adult chickens. As they get bigger, you can reduce the amount of rocks to allow them more room or you can remove the rocks all together! Spring is just around the corner, so give this a try in your brooder this coming year and let us know if it helps!#farmgirl #farmlife #farming #foryoupage #winterboots #itendswithus #TikTokShop #fyp
