How can you use your phone to make you happy every day? We all know that connecting with loved ones, friends, and family is good for our health and happiness. When we are around people we care about, we feel better, and there is a biological reason for that, oxytocin, the love hormone. Being around family has also been shown to drastically reduce stress, and this can be measured in the hormone cortisol. And it turns out that how we connect with them digitally really matters. This 2012 study shows that when you are in a period of high stress, you can actively decrease your stress levels and raise your happiness levels by talking to a family member on the phone - as expected. I would, therefore, assume that texting would have a similar result (maybe a little less, but still positive). But that is not what this study showed. This study showed that during a period of stress engaging in a text conversation, even with a loved one, actually resulted in increased stress levels (cortisol) and further decreases in the feel good hormone of oxytocin. So if you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, definitely reach out and lean on your tribe for support- but make sure to give them a call rather than a text.
