Hope I didn’t come off as rude! A chemistry perspective: soap is a surfactant meant to break down oil- it can’t tell if that grease is good healthy BDG oil or icky horse sweat oil. Love your content

Saddle soap as the last step is the way the US Pony Club Manual recommends. At least the version I had 25 years ago.

When I had my BDG, I used to soap it to make sure it’s clean and then put oil, but no conditioner before oiling so the leather would fully absorb the oil. On the next ride, I would use conditioner!💛

Once the the oil has dried then cleaning it will take off any excess and prevent staining your breeches before your next ride

Saddle soap closes the pores on the leather, that’s what I was told, that’s why it’s last if it was first you wouldn’t get the saddle clean
