I always assumed it was the opposite, that the host was usually the better comedian as they're less reliant on a prerehearsed set and usually act as the first act

The host doesn't need to prove themselves, they've already done it, or the wouldn't be able to introduce new upcoming comedians

The worst hosts are the ones that just introduce the acts without warming the crowd. I find those gigs to be some of the hardest.
