Have them rent the pencil and also have a security deposit that is returned to them if the pencil is returned in good condition. Would teach them what happens when they rent an apartment or house.

I know a teacher who makes them leave a shoe when they take a pencil so when class is over they remember to return the pencil or they walk out with just one shoe 😂
