Fj43 rear window construction After an extensive restoration on this beautiful 1973 FJ43, we were unable to source a replacement window for the overseas hardtop. This was a first effort to create a drape mould form. After a few failed attempts, it worked like a champ! Here’s some pointers if you’re thinking about trying a curtain form yourself! 1. Make sure your formwork is fully dried! Even 2x4’s and plywood still have too much moisture content off the shelves. (Typically as high as 14%) We baked ours for 4 hours at 300f degrees to bring the moisture content close to 0. This step will prevent shrinkage of the form during the actual drape forming. 2. To create a perfectly smooth surface for the form, I applied automotive body fill and sanded with 80/150/300/400 grit sandpapers. 3. When establishing the rough cut for the polycarbonate, be sure to allow at least an extra inch for shrinkage. 4. For the actual drape form, do not exceed 300f degrees or you’ll create bubbles in the polycarbonate. 👎🏻 5. Remove from the oven as soon as it takes the form of your mould. 6. To prevent warpage I used a heat gun on its lowest setting, and feathered the heat from a foot away, just so it cooled evenly on both sides. #restoration #fj #fj40 #polycarbonate #thermoforming #bodyshop #bodyshoplife #toyotalandcruiser
