In 2017, the international ScanPyramids project confirmed a previously unknown internal void inside the Great Pyramid using muon tomography. Great Pyramid of Giza was originally covered in polished white Tura limestone, so reflective that medieval sources say it could be seen shining from dozens of kilometers away. The pyramid sits on a carefully leveled limestone bedrock platform with accuracy to within a few centimeters, achieved without iron tools or modern surveying equipment. Internal temperature inside the pyramid remains remarkably stable year-round, close to the annual average temperature of the region, a result of stone mass and ventilation design. The pyramid’s alignment to true north is more precise than most modern buildings and was achieved using stellar observations, not the Sun. Contrary to popular belief, the Giza Plateau was once bordered by a Nile harbor system, allowing massive stone blocks to be floated almost directly to the construction site.
