![King Aksel, also known as Aksil or Koceïla, was a powerful Amazigh king and military leader who lived in North Africa during the 7th century. He became one of the most important leaders of the resistance against the Umayyad expansion into the Maghreb. Aksel united Amazigh and Byzantine forces and fought against the Umayyad armies. Around 683, his forces defeated the army of Uqba ibn Nafi at the Battle of Vescera, where Uqba was killed. Aksel then took control of Kairouan and established his authority over much of Ifriqiya. He was known for his leadership, military ability, and determination to defend his territory. His rule eventually came to an end when the Umayyads returned with a large army led by Zuhayr ibn Qays.
