The law needs to change. Not paying towards the house and then being entitled to half. It allows financial abuse

I think it’s so funny how people don’t understand how life works. Get married makes everything 50/50, then people are surprised that 50/50 really does mean 50/50

it's frustrating how many people don't understand this before buying a property with someone

It's a marriage not a partnership. If you're not prepared to split everything down the middle on the rare chance that it could end...don't get married in the first place

so they buy a house together he leaves she pays mortgage and then 18 years later he can demand half the house that he hasn't paid for? that's so unfair and harsh

50/50 is normal. Happened to me. Wife never worked she got half the house, savings pensions etc. you just got to accept it. It’s like the 5 stages of grief - you end up with acceptance.

Fairly confident he can force a sale, if he's had to move out of his own house then the courts can force the sale for him

if they’re not married and tenants in common, then it’s her fault for listing them as 50/50. if she paid all of the deposit then she shouldn’t have put him on the deeds.

Never buy or rent with a partner! Do it in your name or your parents name. Learned the hard way.

I got divorced over 20 years ago. I got 50% of the equity which at the time was only £3000. I’m sure I was ripped off !

We're going through this now and our Barrister confirmed they can force a sale well under the years of 18.

What if been living in the house for 5+ years, pays half the bills from day 1 but isn’t on the mortgage, would they be entitled to anything then if they split?

So he didn’t have to be maintenance, she got £20 a month for both kids!!!! He’s entitled to half of what the house is worth now opposed to what it was worth when he left. It’s so wrong 😡

If there’s a minor doesn’t he have a responsibility to pay half the mortgage?

I'm a stay at home mum and obviously not paying the mortgage but my partner couldn't do his job if I also worked. which is one of the reasons the law can't change. it's so complicated

My sister will be in this position soon. Not married but split 19 yrs ago. She’s worked even though disabled, brought up their 2 kids & paid the mortgage solely. He kept leaving jobs - part 2

This exact situation happened to my mum. I reached 18, my mum couldn’t remortgage or buy my dad out. He forced her to sell and had us evicted with no where to go.

I’d like to stay in the house with my children. I can afford the mortgage. But does he still have right the access the house? He comes and goes as he pleases. He has his own house now.

this is why prenup is important although I'm not sure if prenups are valid in the UK. I would be mad if I contributed to the mortgage alone and my spouse broke up and took half. ownership

If we were amicable and we agreed a different share on separation can we do this between us?. As he owes me money from things over the years, I put the deposit in (which he said I would always get back whatever happened).
