Then the result of that expression is used to determine how many arrows appear in the next expression. This process is repeated again and again through sixty-four stages. By the time the final stage is reached, the resulting number is so enormous that there is no meaningful physical way to write it out digit by digit. Even the number of digits is vastly beyond anything that could ever be stored in the observable universe. Despite its incredible size, Graham’s number is still finite. It has a specific value, even though that value cannot be written in ordinary decimal notation. This distinguishes it from infinity, which is not a number but rather a mathematical concept representing something without bound. Graham’s number is unimaginably huge, yet if someone could somehow finish writing every one of its digits, they would eventually reach the last digit. Interestingly, Graham’s number is no longer the largest number to appear in mathematics. Many other finite numbers defined using advanced mathematical notation are vastly larger. Functions such as TREE(3) or values arising from the fast-growing hierarchy eventually dwarf Graham’s number by an unbelievable margin.
