Now that it’s Spring it’s time to feed the garlic to harvest the biggest bulbs. Our hardneck garlic was planted in the garden close to the end of October. Now that it’s April most have sprouted and are ready to start growing until harvest around July-August. To give garlic the best chance to develop large bulbs, we feed them in early Spring. The feed is a low balance nutrient with NPK 4-4-4. Alternatively, we also add in worm castings and if neither are available, you can use finished compost as well. Afterwards hardneck varieties will start to produce scapes early summer. Scapes are immature flowers that extend from the base of the stalk which closely resembles a scallion. They eventually loop once or twice before straightening up. These should be clipped off and eaten, they are delicious! By doing so, the plant focuses its energy to produce big bulbs. We leave the leaf mulch in place to keep down the weeds and regulate moisture. They will eventually break down and add to the quality of the soil. Don’t forget to save your biggest bulbs for replanting. #gardening #garlic #learn #fypage
