The AI process - part 2! Heat detecting is critical to a good conception rate. Cows have a window in which the egg is ready to be fertilized and s3men needs to be deposited at the right time to make the magic happen! There are various signs of a cow in heat or coming into heat, but the one true sign is that a cow will stand be mounted by another cow. Willing to stand means she’s in standing heat! The cow doing the mounting isn’t necessarily in heat herself, but she could be. Secondary signs include chin resting, aggression, restlessness, vocalization etc. I’m looking for them to stand though because the secondary signs don’t guarantee that she’s in heat — she could be coming into heat or going out… or neither! We also use heat detector patches to aid in heat detecting. When using conventional s3men, the cow is bred about 12 hours from when you see them first in standing heat. The optimal breeding window is 10-18 hours after the onset of standing heat, so between the 3 heat checks and 12 hour rule — hitting that window works pretty well! S3xed s3men is a different story and is a bit more finicky. I did use 3 leftover straws this year and had to hit closer to 22 hours from the onset of standing heat (estrus) Stay tuned for part 3!
