@drlouisenewson: If you have ever felt overwhelmed, tearful, anxious or even angry in the run up to your period, then you might have experienced premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Some women can also experience a very severe form of PMS known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which has very similar symptoms but much more intense. You may have wondered why this happens, and it’s usually linked to the changing hormone levels that occur throughout your cycle. I explain more about this in this video. It has become very normalised that women should feel this way but, if it is impacting your day to day, there are routes you can take for treatment. It may be worth speaking to your healthcare professional to discuss options which usually include taking body identical hormones. Before doing so, keep a diary of your symptoms and menstrual cycle for a month as this will be useful in your consultation. The free period tracker on my balance app is a good option for this.

I only feel good around ovulation. I have PMDD. Can I do HRT and it make me feel like I’m ovulating all the time?
