I think the retro aesthetic creates a recency to the plot, that this isn’t something that might happen in the future but it’s something that could happen now or may have happened in the past. It adds urgency and realness to the story

Pretty sure no theory is necessary in this case. The show is just set in some parallel universe that is roughly around the same time period we live in, with a slightly different set of technologies.
