Driving around an obstacle — it’s a bigger challenge to learn than you might think! 🤔 Rats usually rely on their whiskers more than their eyesight for proprioception, and are much more used to controlling their own little bodies than a vehicle! Therefore, introducing the concept of turning the vehicle to go *around* an immovable obstacle has taken several steps. ✍️🐀 First, the rats had to go through the trial and error to realize that they can’t brute-force their way ahead by pressing the accelerator against the obstacle (a cardboard box weighted with books). Once they began experimenting at our encouragement by turning instead (they know tapping is a cue), they still had to figure out *where* they wanted to turn. It’s a multi-step process to complete the semi-circle needed to get directly to the other side of the box. For example, after approaching the obstacle, they had to execute the following 6-ish steps: turn right, go straight, turn right again, go straight, turn right, go straight one final time to reach where the treat dangles! To help them learn, we introduced a checkpoint on one side of the box to break up this sequence into more manageable chunks. The rats know they have to navigate to the scented cones, so they were able to focus on completing half the procedure (and enjoying a smaller treat break for their trouble) before finishing up the task to enjoy the full puff. Kuzko especially is catching on and (very excitingly) seems to grasp the concept of “going around” as more than a series of steps. He often no longer waits at checkpoint one, but goes directly to the goal cone for the big prize, and a couple times has even driven around the box in the reverse direction to follow us back to the treat tube. 🧠 ⭐️ New to our account? Welcome! We give our two bonded rescue rats, Kuzko and Kronk, 10-minute driving lessons once a day as a mental enrichment activity. They choose when to enter and exit the vehicle and take breaks as needed. Kuzko and Kronk also enjoy a variety of other enrichment during their free roam time — follow or check out our previous posts for more! #rescuerats #adoptdontshop #rats #ratstagram #ratsofinstagram #drivingrats
