Plastics, even those that are “BPA free “ can leach any number of plasticizers, stabilizers, and other toxins into soil, ESPECIALLY when in the presence of heat and moisture, like on heat mats and under lights in seed starting and growing. Recycled plastics are even worse due to the additives used in recycling processes. And while this area is largely understudied, we do know that plants can uptake these chemicals (such as endocrine disrupting pthalates) and they can end up in our plants—especially roots but also in leaves, like lettuces. We also know that microplastics affect the soil food web’s ability to properly function. Moreover, leachates produced during plastic degradation negatively affect seed germination. I know we are all so used to starting and growing in plastic. But it’s time to reconsider. Even if the plastic is safe for growing in, all plastic will inevitably end up contaminating our planet and soils, no matter how “sturdy” it is. We’ve been loving these simple wood seed trays made from salvaged lumber, which are not only aesthetically pleasing but affordable and give me peace of mind. If you want to see how we made them and filled them, comment “wood” and I’ll send you the link to the YouTube video. ❤️🌱 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10452891/ https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/plastic-planet-how-tiny-plastic-particles-are-polluting-our-soil https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.9b01339 #sustainable #cottage #garden #gardening #plasticfree
