Elon Musk has unveiled his first flying car, which people have dubbed “one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen”. In a you-have-to-see-to-believe clip, The Tesla Roadster goes up an upside-down ramp before doing a flip. It then lowers itself to the ground – courtesy of rear rocket thrusters. In another clip shared on Musk’s X account, the vehicle is seen lifting off the ground then spinning in the air over four cars and a minivan. Phil Collins’ hit, ‘In The Air Tonight’ plays over the trick. Musk, who is on a mission to go to Mars, claims his new vehicle will “crush every track record that ever existed” and will be available by 2028. “It can basically fly like a rocket. It could do rolls. It could do crazy gymnastics. Whatever you want, really,” he added. The vehicle, unveiled at an event in McGregor, Texas is not “necessarily safety-optimised... but it takes the fun meter to 11 out of ten”. Besides its rocket abilities, Tesla says the Roadster can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in approximately 0.81 seconds and has a top speed of 230mph. Writing on X, one person noted the clip was “one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen”. Motoring journalist Maria McCarthy called Musk’s new motor, a “real achievement”, but said don’t expect to see it “on a street near you soon”.
