@mirandaxhow: Aspirating infant on Thickener? *I’ve done a video a longggg time ago on this but it’s been in the comments literally 10x over each video. I am hesitant with answering because I KNOW it’s a simple fix & solution for those who experience the same issues with their children. But we have NOT been instructed to do thickener & I have absolutely no knowledge or information on how & with her current condition with trying to narrow down exactly what we’re dealing with, me making the decision to have her on thickener seemed intimidating. Also again, my daughters issues were originally suspected from her enlarged adenoids, which got removed several months ago. And recovery time + just general life/sickness (her getting RSV shortly after adenoid removal) , switching pediatricians all together, we really didn’t think about her aspirating until it being a recent diagnosis. The SLP or OT doing the swallow test would be the one that would prescribe the thickener and they would do it immediately after the test if your daughter were aspirating.

Def only thicken with exact directions! Also - we had to switch SLPs. The first one was a terrible. And she was at a top children’s hospital.

I wouldn’t be giving her a thickener without medical advice so you are right on. My youngest aspirated and we cured it solely with feeding therapy and never introduced thickener.

1/? Others have said this already but as an SLP I just want to emphasize that thickening liquids is not a one size fits all solution to aspiration and liquids should only be thickened with guidance

Did the speech therapist mention thickeners? Like say something like “the pulmonologist might recommend thickeners”? If you don’t want to do thickeners you could try Enfamil AR bc it’s thicker

I’m surprised they don’t have her in a feed clinic or the aero digestive clinic. Our feeding speech therapist is who guides with us with thickening . We are in both clinics 🫶🏻
