But if a patient leaves with an IV in their arm, the police have to go try to find them and it needs to be confirmed that it's been removed. At least that's was my experience working in an ED in DC for 8 years

My Hospital doesn’t let us leave with an IV in our arm or our port access either. We’re told that those things have to be removed if we want to leave.

the hospital i used to work at had this policy too. patients could not leave to smoke unless they signed ama papers. employees weren't allowed to smoke on their shift, even on lunch off campus.
