Chavez retained his WBC super-lightweight title. Chavez (85-0 with 73 knockouts) had expressed anger at Haugen, apparently for his having made what Chavez considered racist comments (“All he's fought are Tijuana taxi drivers,” said Haugen). He even refused to shake hands with Haugen (32-4-1) until Cortez demanded it. "He deserved to be punished," Chavez said afterward. "The better man won," said Haugen, who had never been knocked out before tonight.
