@the_london_spy: I first posted this a year ago today and I think it's important to still bring it to people's attention. Asquith Xavier has a plaque in Euston station, commemorating his role in breaking the unofficial race bar on employment practices across British rail as late as 1966. The plaque is very simple and almost hidden, but the story behind it is incredible, and recently in 2023 a new train was launched with his name on it. It's an incredible story of our recent history and he is rightfully here. It was also supported by the national union of railwaymen, although his own local branch protested against it, and raised it as an issue with the minister for railways, Barbara Castle. Mr Xavier was born in Dominica, and came to the United Kingdom as part of the windrush generation. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch described the train naming as an "important initiative" #davidharry #thelondonspy #xavierasquith #britishrail #racialprejudice #1960slondon #euston #railway #racism

That bar wasn't broken everywhere I went to a segregated school and my family was not welcome in the local church 1977 in the UK.

My Father wore a turban when working at British Rail from 1970
He suffered racial abuse on a daily basic but had to put up with it as he had to feed us.🙏

Very kind of you to share this information for those who had no idea about this history. More of this please. We all have to know how far we've come.

Wow. These are the sort of stories that should be taught at school. Not the whitewashed stories that are taught.

Beautiful story, shame we weren’t taught this in school. It’s important next gen realise how recent it was that some brains had not evolved well enough.

So what they did was put up a tiny little plaque which no one case see, read or understand the background of. You can't make up.

My grandad was a union leader for London transport and fought constantly during 60’s & 70’s. Meetings held in my Nan’s kitchen I remember well
