It isn’t a lack of commitment. It’s parenting. Children don’t remember the meeting you attended. They remember who comforted them when they had a fever, who held them when they were scared, and who made them feel safe. As a pediatrician, I can tell you that sick children need more than medicine. They need the security of a trusted caregiver when possible. That emotional support matters for healing, too. Of course, not every parent has paid leave or the flexibility to stay home, and that’s a systemic problem—not a personal one. Every family deserves workplace policies that allow parents to care for their children without fear of losing income or their job. Let’s normalize this simple truth: Our children are not interruptions to our work. They are our priority.
