I wonder if the current systems in America are essentially calling for selling “yourself” … perhaps one’s “social capital” (often represented through “designer” goods [even though a majority may not even be authentic] has become one of THE only ways to achieve upward mobility/the “American dream”

Omg. This makes so much sense. It reminds me of when I wanted to create a business in school called Barter where people would exchange goods for other goods. Does this mean it wouldn’t have worked on a large scale? Getting other universities involved, I mean.
