KINSHASA, Zaire, September 1972: Frontier tensions between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea were resolved in Kinshasa after talks that were led by President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire and hosted with the support of Congolese President Marien Ngouabi. The negotiations, which took place on Sunday, September 17, brought together President Albert Bernard Bongo of Gabon and President Francisco Nguema of Equatorial Guinea. The two leaders had been engaged in a dispute over the possession of three small islands off the coast, which Gabon had accused Equatorial Guinea of occupying. By the close of the talks, it was announced that the two nations had reached an agreement to settle their differences. President Bongo confirmed that Gabon and Equatorial Guinea had put aside their frontier quarrel, while President Nguema declared that a joint commission would be created. Representatives from Zaire, Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea were expected to participate in this body, which would design mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of any future disagreements. The Kinshasa talks were described as a major step toward strengthening regional harmony and stability in Central Africa. The successful mediation was credited to the leadership of Marechal Mobutu, who invited both sides to the table, and to the firm commitment of the heads of state to pursue unity through dialogue rather than confrontation. Diplomatic cables noted that the agreement symbolized the determination of African nations to solve disputes within their own framework of cooperation, without recourse to external powers. The outcome was hailed as another example of the Pan African vision of peaceful coexistence and regional solidarity. #historia #congolaise🇨🇩 #africa #surualifupi #congo
