I did some clinical hours at one where a lot of the patients were either active/ex military & they seemed really normal for the most part, but you could sense their fragile state at the same time.

Idk about other places but there was a couple people I didn't think belonged there one was an old lady that got beating up by her neighbor and the other was a blind guy who had nowhere else to go
