A woman who is 52 and was laid off and can’t get scheduled a job interview to save her life because everyone thinks she’s “too old.” Not being given a chance because you’re too old is ageism and that is unfair.   You know who isn’t brining an iced coffee to a job interview? A woman who took 8 years off to raise her kids and now has a gap on her resume. Being perceived negatively because of your gender is sexist and is unfair.   This discourse about whether or not you should be able to bring an iced coffee to a job interview is a privileged conversation. If you have ever brought an iced coffee to a job interview you do not know discrimination and true unfairness.   For those of you who are battling it out in the comment section saying that “things need to change” so you can bring your iced coffee to a job interview you’re right about one thing, things need to change but it isn’t about iced coffee.   We need to train hiring managers to be less biased, less sexist and less racist. We need to change the conversation from can you bring an iced coffee to why are non-white applicants routinely discriminated against? Why are people over 45 considered too old? How can we see past people’s looks and see their skills?   If you think not being able to bring an iced coffee to a job interview is unfair, you don’t know how the world works and you have never experienced true unfairness. Try getting a corporate job being non-white, over 45 and disabled.   Please do me and use all the gen z “we gotta change the world” energy on things that actually need changing.
