WHAT IS GHIBAH? ghibah (الغيبة) - Backbiting. It was also reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: “Do you know what ghibah is?” The people said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “This is mentioning something about your Muslim brother that he would not like.” Someone said: “What if what I am saying is true of my brother?” He said: “If what you are saying is true of him, then you have committed ghiba, and if it is not true of him, then you have slandered him!” 📚Muslim 2589. Imam an-Nawawi, explaining the meaning of ghiba and its types, said: “Ghiba is mentioning something about a person that he would not like. Whether it is a physical defect, a flaw in religion, or in his life affairs, or in his behavior, or in his children, or in what concerns his wife, his servants, even his clothes, his gait, or his joyful mood, or his frowning appearance, and the like, which is related to this. And it does not matter whether these shortcomings were mentioned in words, gestures, or facial expressions.” 📚al-Adhkar 288. Also, the scholars attributed to ghiba the words of those who, when mentioning a Muslim, say: “May Allah forgive us,” or: “May Allah have mercy on him,” while hinting at the one whom they mentioned, and saying this mockingly, making it so that they begin to think badly of the one whom they mentioned. 📚Fath al-Bari 10/469, 📚al-Adhkar 290.
